The IP rating is the protection level provided by enclosures to electrical equipment. This is denominated by a two digit number; for example IP67 is;
  • 6 product is completely protected against dust
  • 7 product is completely protected against effect of immersion

Please see below table for explanation of all digits.

First Digit

Second Digit

0
No protection
0
No protection
1
Protected against solid bodies larger than 50mm (eg. accidental contact with the hand)
1
Protected against vertically falling drops of water (condensation)
2
Protected against solid bodies larger than 12mm (eg. finger of the hand)
2
Protected against drops of water falling at up to 15 degrees from the vertical
3
Protected against solid bodies larger than 2.5mm (eg. tools and wires)
3
Protected against drops of rain water at up to 60 degrees from the vertical
4
Protected against the solid bodies larger than 1mm (fine tools and small wires)
4
Protected against splashings of water from all directions (360 degrees)
5
Protected against dust (no harmful deposit). Completed protection from solid bodies
5
Protected against jets of water from all directions (12.5mm bore nozzle, 10m head, 3m distance)
6
Completed protection against dust. Complete protection from solid bodies.
6
Protected against jets of water of similar force to heavy seas. Same conditions as 5 but distance of 1.5m

7
Protected against the effects of immersion at a specified pressure for a limited time (1m immersion).

8
Protected against the effects of immersion at a specified pressure for unlimited time(1m immersion).
